What Freight Hauler is

Freight Hauler is the new Train Sim World 7 mode for people who want cargo without a scripted briefing. The sim scatters freight cars across a route. Each wagon has a home. You decide the order, the power, the length, and whether you build one monster train or many short trips. There is no dispatcher in your ear and no passenger clock. The session is complete when every wagon is where it belongs. A debrief then summarises what you did.

You set how many cars spawn, so a lunch-break session and a three-hour yard puzzle are both valid. Time of day, weather, and layer options match what you already know from Timetable. You can also run with no AI traffic if you want the railway to yourself. The live map is the planning tool: inspect wagons, read the load type, and see the destination. Dovetail is not giving you a talking wagon-ID companion; you have to look.

Freight Hauler uses Free Roam spawning. Any locomotive you can spawn from your collection can do the work. Trains that layer into TSW7 core timetables can appear as well. You are not locked to the Class 66, the CSX pair, or the Vectron, even though those are the obvious tools on the three launch maps.

Where it works at launch

At launch Freight Hauler only runs on Train Sim World 7 core routes and timetables:

Dovetail has said it is exploring the mode on more compatible timetables later. Do not assume last year’s favourite freight map is already in the list. Compatible content still matters for Free Roam locos and for Timetable elsewhere; it does not unlock Freight Hauler on those older routes on day one. Steam can use compatible add-ons during early access; consoles wait for full launch on 15 September 2026. Deluxe and Ultimate early access began 10 September 2026.

Deluxe extras such as the GP49H-3, Class 333, and ICE 4 are passenger toys. They can still be spawned if you want a weird rescue engine, but the honest power is on standard locomotives. See deluxe locomotives if you insist on mixing them in.

Live Weather, Live accounts, and controls

Freight Hauler does not require a Dovetail Live login. You can shunt offline. Live Weather does require Live. If you want rain that matches the real Miami afternoon, sign in; if you only want wagons home, skip the account.

Beginner controls are Timetable and Free Roam only at launch. Freight Hauler is its own mode. Plan on immersive controls, or accept the incompatibility warning if the toggle is still on. Settings > Controls is the path either way. The controls reference lists keyboard and pad bindings. Player Assist still helps with auto coupling and junctions if you leave those on.

Read game modes if you are mixing this with Journey or Scenario on the same evening. Freight Hauler is not a replacement for Timetable freight diagrams; those remain scheduled jobs with a clock. This mode is the sandbox that answers “I want to move stone until I am done.”

How to actually finish a session

Start small. A high wagon count on Bavaria with full passenger layers is how you spend two hours on the map and zero hours coupling. Drop the car count, turn traffic off for the first try, and pick one geography.

Yorkshire plan. Open the map, find HYA hoppers tied to Rylstone and Leeds Aggregate, and group stone before you chase random boxcars. One well-built Class 66 is faster than three heroic consists that stall on the bank. Neville Hill is a place to regroup, not a trophy.

Florida plan. Treat Miami yards as the puzzle and Boca as the long haul. CSX GP38-2 for switching, SD40-2 for heavier Dura-Max cuts. Watch the FEC crossing logic at Metrorail Transfer if you leave traffic on; a red until you are cleared is authentic, not a bug.

Bavaria plan. The Vectron will do the distance. The danger is ICE and S-Bahn traffic if layers stay on. Run no-traffic until you know the yards at Nürnberg Rbf, then add layers back.

When the last wagon is home, take the debrief at face value. It is a summary, not a competitive rank. If you bounced off the mode, go back to getting started and run a passenger diagram; the map skill transfers. If a core route is missing from the picker, you launched before add-ons finished — see how to download Train Sim World 7. The Tadami Line is not a Freight Hauler map at launch; watch the roadmap. Other procedures live on the guides hub.

On Airedale, walk the map, group Rylstone stone first, then Leeds Aggregate. Do not collect every stray hopper into one heroic train unless you enjoy stalling on the bank. That single habit is the difference between a clean debrief and a consist you cannot restart.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which routes support Freight Hauler at launch?

Only Train Sim World 7 core routes: Airedale & Wharfedale, Florida Tri-Rail, and Nürnberg–Würzburg. Older add-ons are not in the list yet.

Do I need Dovetail Live for Freight Hauler?

No. Freight Hauler works without Live. Live Weather does require a Dovetail Live login.

When is a session finished?

When every scattered wagon is at its destination. You then get a debrief summary. You choose the wagon count before you start, which controls how long that takes.

Can I use any locomotive?

Yes. Spawn from your collection with Free Roam tools, including locos that layer into TSW7 core timetables. Core freight power is listed on standard locomotives.

Do beginner controls work in Freight Hauler?

Not at launch. Beginner controls are Timetable and Free Roam only. Use immersive controls for this mode.

Is this the same as Timetable freight?

No. Timetable freight is a scheduled diagram. Freight Hauler is an unscripted sandbox with random cars. Compare both in game modes.
