Simplified Controls

What beginner controls change

Train Sim World 7 adds a toggle called Beginner Controls, also described as simplified controls. It is built for people who want to move a train without performing a full cab start. Direction, power, brake, and doors become a small set of buttons. Cab setup is removed. Physics and sound run in a simplified form on every train, including stock that still has a dense real desk when you switch back to immersive controls.

Turn the feature on from Settings > Controls, or choose Beginner during first-time setup as described in getting started. You can flip it later without creating a new profile. Immersive controls stay in the product; beginner mode does not delete them.

At launch the toggle is valid in Timetable and Free Roam only. More modes are expected later. If you pick something incompatible, the sim warns you and invites you back to immersive controls. Do not fight that warning. Use a supported mode, or accept the full desk for Scenario, Journey, Conductor, or Freight Hauler until Dovetail extends the list.

The game modes guide is the place to see what each tile is for. The controls reference keeps the full keyboard, PlayStation, and Xbox tables for both layouts.

Keyboard and controller

On keyboard the beginner layout is:

  • W / S — set direction forward or reverse
  • A / D — increase or decrease throttle
  • ; / — decrease or increase brake
  • Y / U — left or right doors
  • E — leave the seat
  • Space — horn
  • 1–8 — cameras, mouse wheel to zoom
  • 9 — map (hold for schedule)
  • Esc — pause / clipboard

On PlayStation and Xbox, D-pad up/down sets direction, D-pad left/right works the doors, the right trigger raises throttle, the right bumper lowers it, the left trigger raises brake, and the left bumper lowers it. Face buttons still cover seat exit and the cab options overlay. The simplified HUD lets you click common actions with a mouse on PC instead of hunting a switch.

That is the whole driving loop for a Class 331 stopper on Airedale & Wharfedale: pick direction, feed power, brake for the platform, open the correct side, close, repeat. The same loop works on a Tri-Rail BL36PH into Florida or a BR 440 on Nürnberg–Würzburg. You are not skipping the railway. You are skipping the pre-movement ritual.

Physics, assists, and what still matters

All trains are compatible with simplified physics and sound at launch, including standard locomotives and deluxe locomotives such as ICE 4, Class 333, and GP49H-3. A 12-car ICE 4 still needs earlier braking than a three-car 331. A loaded Class 66 on HYA hoppers still drags. Simplified does not mean arcade speed or instant stops.

Player Assist is a different menu. Beginner difficulty turns auto coupling and automatic manual junctions on, keeps notifications on, leaves Expert Mode off, and sets AI Conductor to Always. You can drive with beginner controls while later tightening assists, or the reverse. AI Conductor can own doors if you only want the throttle.

Safety systems on by default is also separate. Leave AWS, PZB, and similar devices off until you can cancel an alerter without panic. Beginner controls remove setup; they do not read German magnets for you.

Live Weather still needs a Dovetail Live login. Beginner controls do not. You can learn the layout offline, then add weather when you care. PC players should finish this layout on a normal screen before chasing the Epic preset in graphics settings. Handheld play on Steam Deck was hoped to be verified; it is a poor place to learn a new control scheme.

When to switch to immersive

Stay on beginner controls until a full Northern diagram feels boring rather than stressful. Then graduate on a Class 66, not ICE 4. Freight reverser, independent brake, and a long consist teach cab setup faster than a 250 km/h dash that beginner mode was already simplifying. Use Free Roam on Yorkshire so you can stop, reset, and try the desk again without a timetable clock.

Keep the how to download checklist in mind if a route is missing; simplified controls will not populate an empty menu. Older add-ons still need a Train Sim World 7 download via compatible content. Steam can use that library during early access; consoles wait for full launch on 15 September 2026. Early access for Deluxe and Ultimate began 10 September 2026. None of those dates change the Settings > Controls path.

The rest of the guides hub assumes you can move a train. This page is how you get there without a 20-minute start procedure. When the Class 66 desk finally makes sense, leave beginner mode off for that traction type and keep it on for late-night passenger runs. You are allowed both.
