What Dovetail actually promised
Dovetail hoped Train Sim World 7 would be Steam Deck Verified at full launch. Until that badge exists, treat handheld play as a supported PC target, not as the design centre. The official FAQ recommended settings are the ones to copy first: 1280x800, Medium, FSR Quality, Frame Generation On, Max FPS 30. In the Steam Performance menu, set Frame Limit to 60 FPS / 60 Hz so the overlay and the in-game cap are not fighting each other.

DirectX 12 is the default renderer in Train Sim World 7. Stay on 12. Frame generation in this client pairs with FSR upscaling and wants DX12. Do not chase DLSS on Deck. Do not turn Enhanced Lighting and Epic draw distance on until Medium at 30 fps is already stable in a busy station.
The in-game 30 fps cap is the handheld budget. The Steam overlay 60 Hz cap is the refresh ceiling. If you raise in-game Max FPS to 60 and leave Medium, stations will hitch. If you drop the overlay to 30 Hz, you duplicate the cap. Leave overlay at 60 and in-game at 30 unless you have tested a different pair on your own unit.
Detail on upscalers, frame-generation latency, and named PC presets lives on graphics settings. Desktop GPU rows live on system requirements. Deck is the Medium / 800p / 30 fps cousin of those tables, not a replacement for them.
Why the first hour should not be on Deck
Handheld is not the design target for the first hour. Training Center, bindings, and a first timetable stop are easier on a desk. Follow getting started on a monitor if you have one. Claim Free Starter on Deck only if the handheld is your only PC, then stay in Training Center until Medium holds 30 fps.
Brake timing is where frame generation shows latency. A 30 fps cap with generated frames can look smoother than it feels when you notch a brake into Leeds or Nürnberg. If stops overshoot, turn frame generation off for one diagram and compare. Smooth motion is not worth a platform overrun.
Docked 1080p is a different machine. The FAQ numbers are for the 1280x800 handheld panel. If you dock, start from High or Medium at 1080p with FSR Quality and a 30 fps cap, then raise one slider at a time. Do not copy an Epic desktop profile onto the dock.
What to drive on a handheld
Pick short dwells over long consists. A Northern Class 331 stopper on Airedale & Wharfedale is the gentlest paid start. An hourly BL36PH on Florida Tri-Rail is the diesel classroom. A BR 440 RE10 on Nürnberg–Würzburg is the German classroom. Save 13-car ICE 4, CSX yards, and night rain for a desktop.
Deluxe traction is heavier on the eyes and the SSD. DB BR 412 ICE 4 is a 12-car or 13-car high-speed set. Northern Class 333 is a four-car fishbowl that still sits in Leeds station throats. Tri-Rail GP49H-3 is a rattly Geep in Miami suburbs. All three are documented with the rest of the Deluxe pack on deluxe locomotives. Standard cabs that are kinder on Deck are on standard locomotives. The trains hub is the catalogue if you arrived from search.
Keep the install lean. Ultimate pulls selected Train Sim World 6 Deluxe routes on top of the three cores. That is more disk than a 40 GB FAQ line. Put the library on an SD card only after you have tested the core routes from internal storage.
Cloud, heat, and a sensible order
Steam Cloud is supported. Finish a Training Center lesson on Deck, then continue that profile on a desktop without copying folders.
Heat and battery are why the 30 fps cap exists. TDP limits are your problem, not Dovetail’s table. If the fan is already loud on Medium, do not add Epic shadows. Drop foliage and view distance first, then preset.
A sensible handheld order:
- Confirm the SKU on editions.
- Copy the FAQ stack above.
- Complete Training Center with beginner controls.
- Take one Class 331 or BL36PH diagram, not ICE 4.
- Only then test Deluxe locos or a docked 1080p profile.
Deck can run Train Sim World 7. It should not be where you learn the sim, tune Epic, or judge a 13-car ICE. Use it for short Northern stoppers after the first hour already happened on a desk.
